Our Story
Late in the night on October 31, 2012, a catastrophic fire destroyed the Shelter House at Fort Kaskaskia. The Randolph County Historical Society (RCHS), along with the Illinois Dept of Natural Resources (IDNR) immediately began a fundraising campaign to rebuild the shelter to its original specifications. Thank you to the many who supported this effort! Over several years and an exhaustive search, it was finally determined that timbers like those in the original Shelter were unobtainable. Now, RCHS and IDNR have joined with Randolph County, the Randolph County Progress Committee, and the Community Foundation of Randolph County to finish the task of rebuilding our Shelter House. With modern technology and building materials, the Shelter will be reconstructed using the original four corner stone pillars.
